Researchers of Osmania University in India have done an investigative study on musk mallow seeds having neuroprotective components. They are looking at musk mallow seeds’ effectivity on people with Alzheimer’s.
The abundance of the Plant in Certain Regions
With the scientific name Abelmoschus moschatus, Musk mallow is a flowering plant that is commonly found in Northern Australia and East Asia. This plant is also under the same category as okra.
Aside from planting musk mallow as an ornamental, people use the seeds as a flavoring for food and liquors. Musk mallow seeds resemble sesame seeds when roasted and fried. Healers use them to relieve muscle pain and spasm, fever, bad breath, and dental problems.
Anti-Toxicity of Musk Mallow Seed Extracts
Based on the findings revealed in the International Journal of Green Pharmacy, researchers discovered that musk mallow could repeal the effects of fluoride’s toxicity.
Too much fluoride can affect the condition of the brain, heart, and even tissues. This can be dangerous for the bones too.
Flouride can actively react to oxidative stress. Oxidative stress happens when there is an imbalance quantity of antioxidants and harmful elements in the body.
Oxidative stress plays a significant role in developing diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. When fluoride levels are high, these can affect the functions of the brain.
Impact on Fluoride Levels That Influence Oxidative Stress
To prove that musk mallow seeds can fight the negative effects of fluoride, sodium fluoride was administered to the rats’ brains.
The researchers evaluated how musk mallow extract can affect the sizes and shapes of cells, neurotransmitters, and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). They also divided pregnant rats into six groups.
The rats were given amounts of fluoride and vary the amount of musk mallow extract and ethanolic extract for 51 days.
In the experiment, it was revealed that the rats’ learning abilities were decreased with fluoride.
How Fluoride Affects Neural Networks
The histopathological examination showed that fluoride affected brain cell connections. These neural branches are highly significant since they carry signals to synapses.
Synapses are used to transfer ideas and information. These brain networks were possible because of fluoride, but these were altered when musk mallow extract was given to the rats.
With these findings, researchers concluded that musk mallow seed extracts effectively protect brain cells from fluoride toxicity.
This can be good news to people who suffer from neurological conditions like Alzheimer’s, and it can also serve as prevention against such illnesses.
